"Acadia I"  - 2020 - Acrylic on wood panel - 48 x 48 inches

Alecia Sudmeyer Art

I work in a variety of mediums including acrylic, oil pastel, gouache, collage, and digital.
My abstract work seeks to capture the energy of organic and natural objects in landscapes and the effect that weather and time has upon their surfaces.

Selected Paintings

I lived for many many years in Portugal where most of my paintings reflect the beauty of the cork tress and countryside. Since returning to Maine, the Acadian coast has been my inspiration.

Current Work

I am currently working on a series of abstract paintings using gouache and ink. Tree and rock forms in vibrant hues - resilience and beauty amidst environmental transformation.

Digital Paintings

In 2023, I began the creation of digital paintings using Procreate and digital pen. This technique allows me to explore traditional painting and illustration techniques digitally.

About

Alecia Sudmeyer - Artist

I  am an artist and marketing professional with over 30 years of national and international experience developing and executing strategic marketing functions through traditional and digital media.

I studied painting and English literature (graduating summa cum laude) at Brandeis University. After college, I moved to Portugal where I lived and worked as an artist, web designer, and entrepreneur, starting one of the country’s first, woman-owned, independent digital design agencies. I divided my time between my business in Lisbon and my art studio in the Portuguese countryside.

After selling my business, I received my master’s in comparative studies from the University of Lisbon and studied painting and illustration at the Instituto de Belas Arts. My published work, “Color and Power: Reflections on Matisse in A.S. Byatt’s ‘Art Work,’” is the result of my interest in the connection between art and literature. My master’s thesis, “Deep Fiction: A postcolonial and ecocritical reading of works by Mia Couto and T.C. Boyle,” explores representations of the environment from writers on opposite sides of the world.

I returned to my home state of Maine in 2013 and settled in Belfast, where I have my art studio. In 2024 I returned to making art full time and am excited to begin creating anew with themes that continue to fascinate me: translation, ekphrastic work (written responses to works of art), literature, science, spirituality, philosophy, the environment, and the creative process.
